BSE|FM recently completed a site survey at a private residence in London to assess the requirements for replacing an outdated VRV system with a modern Hybrid Variable Refrigerant Flow (HVRF) system. The existing Daikin VRV system was at the end of its economic life cycle and was unable to provide sufficient heating and cooling, prompting the need for an upgraded solution.

According to the project specifications, the new HVRF system will be designed to deliver optimal heating and cooling throughout the property. The installation will include eight concealed ducted fan coil units, each supplying a continuous linear slot grille positioned around the glass-edge perimeter of the residence. These units will be connected via insulated flow and return water pipework to a HBC Controller located within the communal Storage Area.

The external condensing unit will be mounted within an aesthetically pleasing enclosure to ensure it is in keeping with its surroundings. The relevant noise surveys have been undertaken to ensure local compliance

To enhance user convenience, the system will be managed through individual room remote thermostats, providing precise and independent climate control for each space. We have also been instructed to procure and set up the MELCOM Commercial remote system monitoring software for this property which is a first for BSEFM. This software will enable us to monitor and fault find the system remotely should the client have any issues in the future, thus hopefully reducing system downtime & ensuring our engineers have the right equipment to repair prior to arriving.

This upgraded system will significantly enhance the property’s heating and cooling efficiency, ensuring year-round comfort for the residents.

What does an HVRF System do?

A Hybrid Variable Refrigerant Flow (HVRF) system is an advanced climate control solution that combines the benefits of traditional VRF systems and water technology. It is designed to provide efficient, flexible, and more environmentally friendly heating and cooling, making it an ideal choice for residential and commercial buildings, especially hotel rooms and bedrooms when refrigeration leak detection can be avoided.

Unlike conventional VRF systems that use refrigerant exclusively for both indoor and outdoor units, HVRF systems distribute cooling and heating via a combination of refrigerant and water. The refrigerant circulates between the external unit and an HBC (Hybrid Branch Controller), where the system transitions to water circulation for the internal fan coil units. This hybrid approach minimises the volume of refrigerant required within the building, enhancing safety and sustainability.
