Boiler Upgrade Scheme

By Karen Womack

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), is a key initiative under the UK Government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has increased the funding to the BUS budget for 2024/25 to £180m.

As the government continues to deliver on its goals of supporting households and businesses in transitioning to low-carbon heating systems. BSE|FM as an MCS-certified installer have completed more installations across the UK and can support you in making the switch to greener heating solutions.

Performance in 2024/25

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has achieved notable milestones over the past year, contributing to the UK’s decarbonisation goals. Key highlights include:

  • Increased Uptake: There were 37,721 MCS certified installations during the whole of 2023, by the end of November 2024 this had increased to 49,419 across the whole of the UK.
  • Regional Impact: Uptake has been particularly strong in Wales, and south of the Midlands, highlighting the scheme’s growing popularity nationwide.
  • Improved Processes: Collaboration with stakeholders has streamlined application procedures, making it easier for households to access grants.

While the scheme has made impressive progress, challenges such as supply chain issues and workforce capacity remain, requiring ongoing attention to meet the increasing demand.

Budget Allocation for 2025/26

The UK Government has allocated a budget of £295m for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in 2025/26, representing nearly a 60% increase from the 2024/25 budget. This funding will focus on:

  • Expanding the scheme’s reach to more households and businesses.
  • Increasing the availability of grants for heat pumps and other low-carbon heating technologies.
  • Supporting workforce development programs to train more qualified installers.
  • Enhancing monitoring systems to evaluate the scheme’s long-term impact.
