What are the types of electrical testing?

The main form of electrical inspection and testing comes in the form of periodic inspections. These are carried out at regular intervals across electrical installations to establish whether there are any defects or deficiencies.

There are other forms of electrical testing such as PAT testing – however, this relates to appliances rather than electrical installations.

The team at BSEFM fitted a couple of air to air heat pumps for us to heat a large kitchen, seating area downstairs which we had struggled to heat for a long time. The process was very smooth from first contact to the quote and installation. They are a very professional team and communication was great. No issues at all. Highly recommended.

Great service re-building and re-commissioning a troublesome town house heating system in Haywards Heath. Would definitely recommend reaching out to BSE FM to reliably resolve complex heating and plumbing issues.

Why do you need electrical testing?

Electrical testing is required to avoid a building from fire and to protect from electric shocks. It is often seen that over time the efficiency of electrical appliances deteriorates due to overloading the technical system. Regular testing ensures that all the possible potential risks are identified early and preventative action can be taken.

How long does electrical testing take?

This can depend on a number of different issues. Most importantly, you may have a very large number of electrical installations that require testing. Additionally, there are some elements of electrical testing that require more time such as issues with access challenges.

“BSE|FM were recommended to us by the owner and operator of the Great Northern Hotel at Kings Cross. BSE|FM have installed and maintained heating, ventilation, air conditioning and power systems for a number of years, helping us manage the plant through a combination of vast professional knowledge combined with the ability to diplomatically drive forward our agenda without fear of upsetting incumbent teams.”

“After a laborious search and to my relief, I found BSE|FM to help with answers to my heating problems. You visited my property promptly when we had a useful discussion and you looked over our home to size up our requirements. A quotation was received and within weeks the installation and commissioning was being carried out by your team swiftly, efficiently and with great courtesy and to the schedule as quoted. Any queries I had were always answered and dealt with satisfactorily. The lead engineer was a pleasure to deal with, as was the rest of the team. I would confidently recommend BSE|FM to anyone who has an interest in having a new heating/air conditioning or air source heat pump system installed.”

What does an electrical test involve?

The different types of tests will have specific requirements around testing protocols and what needs to be carried out. However, periodic inspections and testing should always include:

  • Checking whether any of your electrical circuits or equipment have become overloaded
  • Looking for and dealing with any potential electrical shock risks as well as fire hazards in the installation
  • Looking for defective or deficient DIY electrical work
  • Looking for and revealing any lack of earthing or bonding in your electrical installations
  • Carrying out tests on both the wiring and the associated fixed electrical equipment in order to ensure it is safe

How often should house electrics be tested?

Electrical installations in both residential and domestic properties should be tested at regular intervals to ensure that they are in good working order and have not developed any issues. Therefore, it is recommended that installations in domestic properties are tested every 10 years. Installations in commercial or industrial properties should be tested every 5 years.

It is up to the person responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the installations to recommend testing sooner if they believe there is a need for it.
