What is a an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump is a low-carbon heating source. It uses a refrigeration cycle to move heat from the air outside and transfer it as useable heat in your home for your hot water cylinder, radiators or underfloor heating. For the installation to work efficiently, we recommend a well-insulated home.

What are the benefits of an Air Source Heat Pump?

Low carbon – Unlike a gas boiler, an air source heat pump does not produce carbon when operating. While they do use electricity, ASHPs can be combined with solar PV panels or a renewable/green energy tariff for clean electricity.
Low running costs – In the right context, air source heat pumps have comparatively low running costs, especially when compared with off-grid fuels such as propane, oil or direct electric heating.
Long lifespan – Air Source Heat Pumps can potentially last around 20 years and do tend to be very reliable. By comparison a gas boiler is only expected to last 10-15 years and will usually need several repairs within that time.
Financial help – The government are currently offering up to £7,500 towards installation of an ASHP with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme so now’s the time to switch!
Minimal maintenance. Annual servicing is recommended to maintain the appliances warranty.
Some systems can also provide cooling in the summer

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government backed scheme which offers householders up to £7,500 towards the installation of an ASHP.

The requirements are:

An in-date Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which was issued within the last 10 years.
You are the property owner.
The property is not a new build.
Has never been owned by a business or organisation.

Note: There is no minimum insulation requirements for applications.

Grants are not available for:

Social Housing
Properties that have already received funding from government or an Energy Company Obligations for the purchase or installation of the heat pump

What are Air source heat pumps?: Air source heat pumps are low-carbon heating systems that take heat from the outside air and transfer it into a building for space heating, hot water or, in some air-to-air systems, warm air heating and cooling. They use electricity to move heat rather than generate it directly, which can make them highly efficient when the building, controls and heat emitters are suitable. BSE FM can advise whether an air source heat pump is appropriate after reviewing the property and its existing heating system.
What are ground source heat pumps?: Ground source heat pumps take low-level heat from the ground and use it to provide heating and hot water. They usually require underground pipework installed in trenches or boreholes, which means they are best suited to properties with suitable land, planned groundworks or enough space for the required collector system. They can be very efficient, but the design stage is critical because the system must be correctly matched to the building’s heat demand and site conditions.
How much can an ASHP reduce my energy costs?: The saving from an air source heat pump depends on the building, insulation levels, current heating system, electricity tariff, heating demand, radiator or underfloor heating suitability and how well the system is designed and used. The biggest savings are often seen where an ASHP replaces oil, LPG or direct electric heating, but no responsible installer should promise a fixed saving without a proper survey. BSE FM can assess the property, explain likely running cost factors and advise whether grant funding, MCS requirements or VAT relief may be relevant to the project.
What maintenance do ASHP systems require?: Air source heat pumps should be serviced regularly to keep them efficient and reliable. Annual maintenance is usually recommended and may include checking filters, coils, fans, refrigerant levels, controls, pumps, water pressure, valves, electrical connections and overall system performance. Keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves, debris and restricted airflow also helps protect efficiency and reduce avoidable strain on the system.
