What is a an Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump is a low-carbon heating source. It uses a refrigeration cycle to move heat from the air outside and transfer it as useable heat in your home for your hot water cylinder, radiators or underfloor heating. For the installation to work efficiently, we recommend a well-insulated home.
What are the benefits of an Air Source Heat Pump?
- Low carbon – Unlike a gas boiler, an air source heat pump does not produce carbon when operating. While they do use electricity, ASHPs can be combined with solar PV panels or a renewable/green energy tariff for clean electricity.
- Low running costs – In the right context, air source heat pumps have comparatively low running costs, especially when compared with off-grid fuels such as propane, oil or direct electric heating.
- Long lifespan – Air Source Heat Pumps can potentially last around 20 years and do tend to be very reliable. By comparison a gas boiler is only expected to last 10-15 years and will usually need several repairs within that time.
- Financial help – The government are currently offering up to £5000 towards installation of an ASHP with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme so now’s the time to switch!
- Minimal maintenance. Annual servicing is recommended to maintain the appliances warranty.
- Some systems can also provide cooling in the summer
The government are offering £7,500 towards the installation of an ASHP with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and have also removed the requirement to install loft and wall insulation if recommended on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) prior to any ASHP installation, so now’s the time to switch!
