What are the types of electrical testing?
The main form of electrical inspection and testing comes in the form of periodic inspections. These are carried out at regular intervals across electrical installations to establish whether there are any defects or deficiencies.
There are other forms of electrical testing such as PAT testing – however, this relates to appliances rather than electrical installations.
What does an electrical test involve?
The different type of tests will have specific requirements around testing protocols and what needs to be carried out. However, periodic inspections and testing should always include:
- Check whether any of your electrical circuits or equipment has become overloaded
- Look for and deal with any potential electrical shock risks as well as fire hazards in the installation
- Look for defective or deficient DIY electrical work
- Look for and reveal any lack of earthing or bonding in your electrical installations
- Carry out tests on both the wiring and the associated fixed electrical equipment in order to ensure it is safe
How long does it take to do an electrical test?
This can depend on a number of different issues. Most importantly, you may have a very large number of electrical installations that require testing. Additionally, there are some elements of electrical testing that require more time such as issues with access challenges.
How often should house electrics be tested?
Electrical installations in both residential and domestic properties should be tested at regular intervals to ensure that they are in good working order and have not developed any issues. To this end, it is recommended that installations in domestic properties are tested every 10 years, while installations in commercial or industrial properties are tested every 5 years.
It is up the person responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the installations to recommend testing sooner if they believe there is a need for it.
